Artist's Comments

This horse was found abandoned by his owner. When contacted the owner decided to give him up instead of face large animal cruelty fines. He is now in an equine rescue receiving the food he desperately needs. In just a few days he's gained over 100 pounds of weight but still weighs about half of what he should.
So why did I take this photograph? I wanted to show everyone that sometimes humans can be so destructive by doing nothing. Simply by not feeding and giving water to this horse his previous owner reduced him to nearly nothing.

Edit: I've decided to rename this submission.

Edit 7/24/07: I can't believe its happened, I got a Daily Deviation :) Honestly I don't yet know how to feel, I'll let it sink in for a while =D The lack of a full view on this one bothered me so I remembered I had a copy of it on another art site (it was the very same identical photo and crop) so I edited the photo so the full view would return. I also wish I could replace my old annoying watermark with something more subtle but the original was lost in a drive crash.

Thanks in advance for all the comments, favorites, and watches I get from this, I'll do my best to get to them all.

Edit 7/25/07
I managed to mess with my old defacing copyright enough to make it much less noticeable, its still there but not as obvious as it previously was. I also cut the title off the bottom as well.

Daily DeviationThe Face of Neglect by =TheYawningHorse Comment by =Caroro "The Face of Neglect by =TheYawningHorse clearly shows the damage a human being can do by just plainly doing nothing at all. Why should any animal, Equine, Canine, Feline, or just, what ever, suffer like this? Perhaps this photo can change the ways of many people, and help them see from an animal's point of view. There is so much expression in this photo, so it may make you wonder, the same way it made me wonder, how such a person could ignore this." (Comment by ^KevLewis sometimes photography isn't just beautiful it's very powerful) (Suggested by *caroro and Featured by `KevLewis)

Poor horse, looks old and sick.
i think we can all see its a horse and not a cow.....also, i dont think u chose the right font style..it looks like your trying to be humorous, rather than sympathetic
I am in no way being humorous with this deviation, I'm only remaining consistent when I choose the same font for a frame. I don't see anything funny about this picture at all, a horse starved because nobody would take care of it.
fucking hell that horse is thin y dont u help it sted if t8king piks
I updated the description, maybe it will answer some of the questions you may have.
i dont know why everyone is giving you so much shit about this photo. I think it is very powerful and it is helping the problem. hopefully it will get through to someone. Great job on this.

When I see animals like this that have been abused, it makes me want to take the owner out and abuse him/her in the same manner. Thank you for posting such a powerful image to make others aware of this overpowering problem. I hope people who treate animals this way see this photo and as a result can't sleep tonight. :+fav:

While this photo will probably do little more than shock some people I do hope it does raise awareness to the problem of equine and abuse. The good thing is that this horse will, with a lot of work, become the healthy happy horse he once was.
I agree that it is a very powerful photo, I feel that the eye conveys most of the emotion of the photo.
Hopefully the horse is younger and will recover fully. If you see him again, give him a pet let him know that there are people out there that care for him. I can't wait to be a veterinarian and help these guys out. I swear, I'm starting to dislike people more and more as I get older.
